Dongwha Patina NZ Ltd - MDF Plant
A thermal energy audit of Dongwha Patinna identified seven energy management opportunities, and a buyer for excess fuel produced onsite - which together could be worth up to $288,000 a year. Dongwah uses most of its waste wood to produce heat for steam.
Description of facility:
Energy is a major cost for Dongwha Patinna and the company is active in looking for efficiencies.
Using their own processing offcuts for fuelling their boiler is a handy way to dispose of their wood by-products. However the downside is that having too much fuel often means the boiler is run inefficiently just to use up as much of the wood by-products as possible. Dongwha management suspected approximately 5-10% of its thermal energy was being wasted (the audit later found this figure might be nearer 20%).
Finding a market for the excess fuel meant they could focus on making the boiler as efficient as possible, and generate additional revenue from selling the by-products at the same time.
